Restrictive practices and behaviour support.

Information for participants, families and support teams about restrictive practices in the NDIS, and how positive behaviour support works to reduce and eliminate them.

What restrictive practices are.

A restrictive practice is any action that limits the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability. The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission describes categories such as seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint and environmental restraint.

A behaviour support plan does not authorise restrictive practices.

A behaviour support plan does not, by itself, authorise the use of a restrictive practice. Authorisation is a separate process set by state or territory requirements, and Steppr does not authorise restrictive practices. Your practitioner can explain what applies in Western Australia.

How Steppr helps.

Where restrictive practices are in use, our practitioners work with the participant, family and support team to understand why behaviours happen and to build strategies that reduce the need for them. This starts with a functional behaviour assessment and leads to a behaviour support plan .
