Functional behaviour assessment (FBA) in Perth.
A functional behaviour assessment (FBA) works out why a behaviour is happening, so support can focus on the real cause instead of just the behaviour itself.
Who an FBA is for.
An FBA is for NDIS participants who are showing behaviours of concern, and for the families and support teams who want to understand what is behind them. It is usually the first step before a comprehensive behaviour support plan.
What an assessment involves.
- Talking with the participant, family and support team about the person, their communication and what a good day looks like.
- Looking at the environment, routines, health, sensory needs and relationships.
- Observing in the places where the behaviour happens, such as home, day programs or the community.
- Working out what the behaviour is communicating or achieving for the person.
How Steppr helps.
Your practitioner explains each step, involves the participant as much as possible, and shares findings in plain language. The results shape a behaviour support plan that fits the person's life.
Common questions
How long does it take? This depends on the person and the situation. Your practitioner will talk through timeframes with you.
Do I need a plan first? Not always. An interim plan can give strategies quickly while the assessment is under way.
